First Date Conversation Starters

First dates are scary, we know! We’ve written about first date etiquettes, first date ideas and how to deal with an outcome of a first date, however, what happens when you’re not that great at conversation? Maybe you’re an introvert and you hate small talk. In today’s post, we’ll give you some great conversation starters for your first date!

Travel

Travelling is such a fun topic to talk about – especially when you have nothing else on your mind. Everyone loves to travel and even if your date doesn’t, that’s probably a conversation starter within itself! Ask your partner where they’ve travelled, where they want to travel and exchange travel stories! This alone can take up a couple of hours.

Life Passions

“What are you most passionate about in life?” – not only is this a great starter, but it also gives you an opportunity to find out more about your date. Seeing what their passions are in life can help give you an insight into the type of person they are and their interests.

Career

This can be a tricky conversation starter, so instead of asking how their working day was (just in case it was a bad one), maybe ask “how did you get into your job?”

Lifestyle

Another great conversation starter is asking about your date’s lifestyle. “Did you grow up here?” “How do you like living here?” – it’s better to stay away from more personal questions like family because this can end up really bad.

Movies & TV Shows

Everyone loves winding down and watching movies or TV shows – bringing up the latest TV show or movie craze is a great way to spark conversation. Talk about your favourite movie or something you use to watch as a kid! See if you have any commonalities.

Food & Local Restaurants

Who doesn’t like food? Who doesn’t like discovering new local joints to enjoy dinner? Talk about your favourite food and any new local restaurants that may be opening. This can also spark an opportunity for a 2nd date!
